Briumvi® Infusions: What Is It & Where To Get It

What is Briumvi®?

Briumvi® (ublituximab-xiiy) is a monoclonal antibody therapy used to treat adults with relapsing forms of multiple sclerosis (MS), including clinically isolated syndrome, relapsing-remitting disease, and active secondary progressive disease. It belongs to a group of medications called anti-CD20 therapies, which are designed to target and reduce B cells — immune cells that play a major role in the body's attack on the nervous system in MS.

Briumvi is administered through intravenous (IV) infusion at our specialized infusion center. The typical infusion schedule includes:

  • First infusion: Approximately 4 hours
  • Second infusion: 2 weeks later, approximately 1 hour
  • Maintenance infusions: Every 6 months, approximately 1 hour each

This twice-yearly schedule provides an effective and convenient treatment option for individuals needing B-cell–depleting therapy.

How Much Does Briumvi Cost?

The Briumvi® infusion cost can vary depending on several factors, such as your insurance plan and coverage. At Rocky Mountain MS Clinic, our goal is to make treatment more accessible and less stressful for every patient.

We partner with nearly all major insurance providers throughout the region — including Aetna, Anthem, Blue Cross Blue Shield, Cigna, Humana, UnitedHealthcare, and others — as well as Medicaid and Medicare. Our team works closely with your insurance company to ensure you receive the maximum coverage available for your Briumvi treatment.

Our dedicated infusion team provides comprehensive support to make treatment more accessible:

  • Handles prior authorizations and benefit verification on your behalf
  • Provides financial counseling to help you understand expected out-of-pocket costs
  • Guides you through copay assistance programs and foundation support options
  • Explores manufacturer patient assistance programs to reduce treatment costs

This removes the administrative burden from you so you can focus on your health.

How Does Briumvi Work?

In multiple sclerosis (MS), the immune system mistakenly attacks the myelin sheath — the protective layer surrounding nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord. When the myelin is damaged, nerve signals are disrupted, which can cause symptoms affecting coordination, balance, movement, speech, vision, and even bowel function.

One of the main immune cells involved in this damaging process is the B cell, which carries a marker known as CD20 on its surface. Briumvi works by:

  • Targeting the CD20 protein on B cells
  • Binding to B cells and signaling the immune system to remove them
  • Depleting B cells before they can attack the myelin sheath
  • Reducing inflammation that drives MS disease activity

What makes Briumvi unique among anti-CD20 therapies is its engineered structure, which allows for faster infusion times compared to some other B-cell depleting medications.

While Briumvi does not cure MS, it helps reduce inflammation and slow the disease's progression by preventing B cells from causing further attacks on the nervous system. Briumvi begins working in your body within 24 hours of the first infusion, but it typically takes several weeks to months to observe its full effect in reducing relapses and disease progression. Clinical studies demonstrating significant results evaluated patients over 96 weeks (nearly two years), with long-term data now available showing sustained benefits up to six years. Most patients can expect to see a reduction in relapse frequency and a slowing of disability progression as the medication takes full effect.

Like all medications, Briumvi can cause side effects, though not everyone experiences them. Common Briumvi infusion symptoms include:

  • Fever, chills, and headache
  • Flu-like symptoms (body aches, sore throat, cough)
  • Nausea, dizziness, and fatigue
  • Pain in the arms, legs, back, or abdomen
  • Skin rash or itching
  • Stuffy or runny nose
  • Sleep problems

Serious Briumvi side effects require immediate medical attention and include:

  • Severe infusion reactions: Difficulty breathing, wheezing, rapid heart rate, or swelling
  • Serious infections: Increased risk of pneumonia or herpes infections
  • Progressive Multifocal Leukoencephalopathy (PML): A rare but serious brain infection
  • Liver damage: Yellowing of skin or eyes, dark urine, or severe abdominal pain
  • Hepatitis B reactivation: In those with a prior infection

Your healthcare team will monitor you closely during and after each infusion to ensure your safety.
