Tysabri®
What is Tysabri®?
Tysabri® (natalizumab) is a monoclonal antibody used to treat relapsing forms of multiple sclerosis (RMS) in adults. It belongs to a class of therapies called selective adhesion molecule inhibitors, which work by preventing harmful immune cells from crossing into the brain and spinal cord, where they can trigger inflammation and nerve damage.
Tysabri® provides an effective treatment option for individuals with MS, helping to reduce relapse frequency, slow the progression of disability, and prevent the formation of new brain lesions.
How much does Tysabri® cost?
Tysabri® cost can vary depending on insurance provider and coverage. Our team at Rocky Mountain MS Clinic is dedicated to helping make treatment more accessible and affordable for our patients.
We work with most major insurance plans in the Rocky Mountain region, including Aetna, Anthem, Blue Cross Blue Shield, Cigna, Humana, PEHP, and Select Health, along with Medicaid and Medicare.
Our staff manages prior authorizations, benefits verification, and helps patients navigate copay assistance and foundation programs to minimize out-of-pocket expenses.
How does Tysabri® work?
In MS, the immune system mistakenly attacks the myelin sheath — the protective layer around nerves that allows for smooth communication between the brain and body. One of the ways these immune cells reach the brain and spinal cord is by passing through the blood-brain barrier, a layer that normally protects the central nervous system.
Tysabri® helps block this process by targeting molecules called alpha-4 integrins that immune cells use to enter the brain and spinal cord. By stopping these cells from crossing the barrier, Tysabri® reduces inflammation, protects myelin, and supports healthier nerve function.
While not a cure for MS, Tysabri® helps control disease activity, minimize relapses, and protect against long-term neurological damage.
