Vyvgart® Infusions: What Is It & Where To Get It
What is Vyvgart®?
Vyvgart® (efgartigimod) is an FDA-approved IV infusion therapy for adults with generalized myasthenia gravis (gMG) who are positive for anti-acetylcholine receptor (AChR) antibodies. In gMG, the immune system produces harmful IgG autoantibodies that interfere with nerve-to-muscle communication, leading to muscle weakness, fatigue, and difficulty performing everyday tasks such as walking, lifting, speaking, or swallowing.
Vyvgart® works by blocking the neonatal Fc receptor (FcRn), which is responsible for maintaining IgG levels in the blood. By reducing these damaging autoantibodies, Vyvgart® helps restore normal nerve-muscle communication, improving muscle strength, reducing fatigue, and enhancing daily functioning.
Delivered as an IV infusion at our specialized infusion center, Vyvgart® ensures controlled dosing, careful monitoring, and one-on-one support from trained nurses throughout treatment.
Vyvgart Infusion Frequency and Schedule:
- Initial treatment: Weekly infusions for four consecutive weeks
- Maintenance treatment: Subsequent cycles scheduled as recommended by your neurologist
Vyvgart IV Infusion Duration:
- Infusion duration: Approximately 1 hour per session
- Observation period: Patients are monitored during and after each infusion for any reactions
- Total appointment time: Generally 2–3 hours including preparation and post-infusion observation
How Does Vyvgart Work?
In generalized myasthenia gravis, IgG autoantibodies attack the acetylcholine receptors at the neuromuscular junction, preventing nerves from signaling muscles properly. This immune activity causes:
- Weakness in arms, legs, face, and neck
- Fatigue during routine activities
- Difficulty walking, lifting, speaking, or swallowing
- Breathing difficulties in severe cases
Vyvgart works through a targeted mechanism:
- Blocks FcRn: Prevents the receptor from maintaining harmful IgG autoantibodies.
- Reduces pathogenic IgG levels: Lowers the antibodies that interfere with nerve-muscle communication.
- Restores neuromuscular signaling: Improves muscle strength and endurance.
- Reduces symptoms and flare-ups: Helps patients maintain daily function and quality of life.
Many patients notice improvements in muscle strength and energy within the first treatment cycle, although individual responses may vary. While Vyvgart® is not a cure, it helps manage disease activity and supports long-term functional improvement.
Most patients tolerate Vyvgart® very well. You may experience mild or temporary side effects such as:
- Headache
- Fatigue
- Upper respiratory infections (stuffy or runny nose, sore throat)
- Infusion site reactions like redness, itching, or mild swelling
- These effects usually improve within a few hours to a few days. Some patients may not experience any side effects at all.
Your healthcare team closely monitors you during and after each infusion to ensure safety and promptly manage any side effects.
