Vyepti® Infusions: What Is It & Where To Get It

What is Vyepti®?

Vyepti® (eptinezumab-jjmr) is an IV infusion treatment for adults designed to prevent migraine attacks before they start. It works by blocking calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP), a protein that contributes to migraine pain and inflammation in the brain. By inhibiting CGRP, Vyepti® helps reduce the frequency, intensity, and duration of migraine episodes.

Vyepti is FDA-approved for the preventive treatment of migraine in adults with both episodic migraine (fewer than 15 headache days per month) and chronic migraine (15 or more headache days per month). It's particularly beneficial for patients who have not found adequate relief with or cannot tolerate oral preventive medications.

What makes Vyepti unique among migraine preventive treatments is its delivery method and dosing schedule. Unlike oral CGRP medications that require daily pills or injectable CGRP inhibitors that require monthly self-injections, Vyepti is administered as an IV infusion just once every 3 months at a healthcare facility. This quarterly schedule offers superior convenience and ensures consistent medication delivery without the burden of daily or monthly dosing.

Vyepti infusion is administered at our specialized infusion center. The treatment details include:

Vyepti Infusion Frequency and Schedule:

  • Infusions administered every 12 weeks (3 months)
  • Treatment is ongoing—patients receive infusions quarterly for continued prevention

Dosing Options:

  • 100 mg dose (for episodic or chronic migraine)
  • 300 mg dose (option for chronic migraine or based on physician recommendation)

Vyepti IV Infusion Duration:

  • Each infusion takes approximately 30 minutes
  • Total appointment time may be longer to allow for preparation and check-out procedures

How Does Vyepti Work?

Migraine is a complex neurological condition involving abnormal brain activity, inflammation, and changes in blood flow. Research has identified calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) as a key player in triggering and sustaining migraine attacks. CGRP levels spike during migraines, causing:

  • Dilation of blood vessels in the brain
  • Transmission of pain signals
  • Inflammation in the protective layers surrounding the brain (meninges)
  • Sensitization of pain pathways that amplify migraine symptoms

Vyepti works through a targeted mechanism:

  • Targets CGRP directly: Vyepti is a monoclonal antibody that binds to CGRP molecules
  • Blocks CGRP activity: By attaching to CGRP, Vyepti prevents it from binding to its receptors
  • Prevents migraine triggers: Without active CGRP, the cascade of events that lead to migraines is interrupted
  • Reduces inflammation: Less CGRP activity means decreased inflammation in brain tissues
  • Decreases pain signaling: By blocking CGRP, Vyepti reduces the transmission of pain signals

What sets Vyepti apart from other CGRP inhibitors is its intravenous delivery and rapid action. Because it's administered directly into the bloodstream, Vyepti achieves immediate therapeutic levels without relying on oral absorption or subcutaneous injection. This allows for faster onset of action compared to other CGRP treatments.

While Vyepti doesn't cure migraines, it's a preventive therapy that can dramatically reduce the occurrence and severity of migraine attacks over time, helping patients regain control of their lives and reduce their reliance on acute migraine medications.

Common Vyepti infusion side effects are generally mild and may lessen as your body adjusts:

  • Stuffy or runny nose (nasopharyngitis)
  • Sore or scratchy throat
  • Coughing or sneezing
  • Feeling tired
  • Headache or muscle aches
  • General cold-like symptoms

Serious Vyepti infusion side effects require immediate medical attention. Vyepti can cause hypersensitivity reactions, including life-threatening allergic responses. Seek emergency help if you experience:

  • Severe allergic reactions: Difficulty breathing, wheezing, or throat tightness
  • Angioedema: Swelling of face, lips, tongue, or throat
  • Anaphylaxis symptoms: Hives, rash, persistent itching, fast or weak pulse, sudden drop in blood pressure (dizziness, lightheadedness), chest tightness, or severe nausea/vomiting

Your healthcare team will monitor you during and after each infusion for any signs of allergic or hypersensitivity reactions to ensure your safety.
